Mood swings during periods are very common. Women often experience mood changes before their periods, and the symptoms can vary from one woman to another.
The causes of mood swings before periods are still not well understood, but it is believed that hormonal changes play a role in this. Some women also report that they have mood swings before their periods because they are anticipating the pain and discomfort that will come with the menstrual cycle.
Extreme mood swings can be considered as PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder) as well. It closely resembles PMS, but is more severe. In case of PMDD, in the week or two before your period, you may experience significant irritation, depression, or tension. These Symptoms often disappear two to three days after your menstruation cycle.
Some of the outstanding symptoms of PMDD are –
- Despair or hopelessness
- Anxiety or stress
- Extreme irritability
- irritation or rage
Bloating, breast discomfort, exhaustion, and changes in sleep and eating patterns are among some other symptoms of PMDD and PMS. However, at least one of these emotional and behavioural symptoms is prominent in PMDD.
The primary cause of PMDD is unknown. Because underlying depression and anxiety are common in both PMS and PMDD, it’s probable that the hormonal changes that cause a menstrual period aggravate mood disorder symptoms.
Treatment for PMDD tried to prevent or reduce the symptoms through Antidepressants, Birth control pills, Herbal remedies, Nutritional supplements, and Diet and lifestyle changes. It is important to connect to the doctor and get over the trauma faced every month. Treatment options can definitely help surpass these symptoms to a greater extent.
